Personal Background:
I attended Susquehanna University for 2 years as a bio major. I then transferred to Maryland Institute College of Art, where I explored my creative side as a sculpture major. While in my third year at M.I.C.A., I started working in a brewpub called The Wharf Rat in Baltimore. I was quickly seduced by the allure of making beer. After expressing serious interest, a lot of volunteer time and quite a few 'social beers' with Head Brewer, Howie Faircloth III, I was offered a full-time position as a brewer. I ended up spending 6 years (5 as Head Brewer) making English-Style Ales, Stouts and Porters at 'The Rat.' I then travelled North America looking for another challenge, only to come back to Baltimore to find an opening at the Baltimore Brewing Company. There I learned to brew traditional-style German Lagers and Ales as well as oversee a much larger production facility. After 3 years at B.B.C., I am excited to get back to my artistic roots and explore my creative freedoms at the District ChopHouse & Brewery.
Brewing Philosophy:
Brewing is like life. No, it is life. Try to learn as much as possible through other people and established resources. Ask a lot of questions, think outside the box. Take these experiences, philosophies and knowledge and apply them as you see fit. Be creative. Oh, and most important, don't forget to sit back and enjoy the fruits of your hard labor.
